Nepotism

Published on: June 24th,2020

Nepotism operates in all social classes, but potential benefits decline as one moves down the social-class ladder. Thus, members of the working class are also recipients of nepotism, but its payoffs are less valuable simply because the working class tends to have lower social capital. Nepotism in the working class tends to be limited to access to apprenticeships, unions, or the more “desirable” working-class occupations.

I actually think nepotism is more common in low-wage jobs than in high-wage, white-collar jobs. I’ve worked in low-end retail stores, bars/restaurants and in construction, and a huge percentage of my fellow employees got their jobs because they were related to, or friends with, another employee.

And I don’t see why some think it’s somehow sinister. I own my own construction company and often have employees asking me to hire relatives or friends. (Sometimes it works out, other times it doesn’t.) Lower-income workers also “network.” They just don’t use that term usually. I’ve rarely worked at a construction job where no one is related, and I’ve worked on some job sites where three or more employees have the same last name.

Many employers don’t want to hire a complete stranger. And they often figure that if “John or Jane Doe” is a good worker, then a relative of theirs or friend of theirs has a good chance of also being a good worker.

Yes, sometimes nepotism means a CEO’s nephew getting a cushy job with a firm because of who he’s related to. But it’s way more likely to mean someone knowing there’s a job opening at the local grocery store that he or she works at and then letting their son, daughter, nephew, niece, cousin, etc, know about it and putting in a good word.

That’s often how new Latino immigrants get jobs on construction sites, just like immigrants to America 100 years ago. They may have been fresh off the boat, but they often had a family member who had been in America for several years and helped them get a job where they themselves worked.

Neither fortunately nor unfortunately, one of the most controversial and devastating topics of 2020 awards belongs to nepotism. It became a hot topic to speak and express our grievances by both common people and native netizens after the suicide of Indian actor Sushant Singh Rajput who has a great following of audience by his subtle acting skills and energizing performances in his well-written movies. Instead of speaking about his decision to end his valuable life in just a single day and relate his death with instigating nepotistic industry, I would like to throw some light upon things where nepotism has entangled our day to day lives and sometimes it has impacted on us directly or indirectly.

As we all know every great people from the past history like Aristotle, Confucius has condemned the way of life in nepotism and the most ancient philosopher and futurist Tiruvallur also pointed it out to be unwise and filthy-virus to the human society. Actually, i don’t like to take a stand as for or against favoritism but every industry like education, sports, politics, business, entertainment…. are facing this common problem which favors a certain group of people and their family crew and not for the rest of the common citizens. This is a great nuisance for common people who belong to non-nepotistic backgrounds because, when the nepotist puts a huge mental stress kind of thing for the reason of not being in their beloved circle, its practically impossible to handle the pressure by common people with nil favoritism group. There are high possibilities for them to go into deep depression, which may lead to wrong decisions that can de-construct the whole life of the base level crowd.

We generally think that, this difference in equality is only for the cinema society most of the times as that industry has been a great influence and a mass medium to the grass root level people. But the real fact is every successful industry has supported favoritism in one or the other way. Have you ever experienced the pain of losing a golden opportunity only because of not being relative or not in hierarchal order of sophisticated or celebs who continue to dominate and compete among themselves?

Sometimes it's really hard-hitting to accept that we live in a society where favoritism oppresses the grass-root level people from unleashing their true talent but giving a night and day delight for the nepotists or their off springs only for the sake of familiarity/known relatives etc... I don’t oppose or am not against the hierarchical rights or their freedom to be on the top of the order but at the same time there should be equal opportunities for true talents who does not have any favoritism backgrounds.

I personally feel that everyone of us (not only big shots) usually needs or requires a known person or familiar people to give us importance wherever we go and help us to seek special attention and for making our work done (sometimes including me). For an instance, when waiting in a queue for any objective to be done, many of us usually think to search people who has some influential powers to make the work done and also, he/she may be favorite/relative for the person in the queue. All the people are standing in the same queue for so longtime but however out of impatience we would try to find such people so that the work is easily done.So here comes the base problem of nepotism where there is imbalance in distribution of importance only for the sake of being/not being his/her relative or known people. Actually, this is the root of favoritism to start with. This builds a strong foundation for nepotism to grow and it becomes the epitome for everyone.

We always tend to point out only the personalities in the higher standard of living ignoring that we do this in a day-day basis. As the topic headline says “Change should be from us and it is us who can break this kind of inhuman desire”. “Change from the bottom of your heart and not for the sake of others”. Hence from this minute, we must take a owe that we all belong to one and we should unite together to ensure the equality of everyone every time.
